Shintarou wasn’t sure what to think of Sakamaki Asuka when the coach introduced her as the assistant manager. Had Satsuki not been adequate by the coach’s standards for some reason? He didn’t think the girl was lacking in any area, so why Asuka?

She didn’t look that special, black hair cut to her chin, bored looking blue eyes, a fairly muscular build… Nothing special with what he’d heard about her. The blank look on her face also didn’t tell him anything as to why this girl was now helping.

He’d heard she’d played on the girl’s basketball team and was a wonderful player before. So why was she just managing with Satsuki now? Had something changed in basketball?

“Midorima…” Seijuurou’s voice brought the green haired boy back to reality. “You’re kind of staring.”

“Oh.” Shintarou looked down at his feet. “I didn’t mean to, I was just trying to figure out why we needed another manager…”

“Ah, true. It seems a little odd.” The redhead frowned slightly, eyeballing the black haired girl carefully. “Maybe you should ask her, then? Sate the curiosity of both of us.”

“Why ask me to?” Shintarou raised an eyebrow at the newly appointed captain. Why didn’t he ask Daiki or Atsushi to do it? The ones who were blunt enough to not seem strange doing it.

“You’re the one who pointed it out, Midorima, you should ask.” Was all Seijuurou replied, a small shrug given.

The little redhead kitten of a captain had a point… He brought it up, he should be the one to try and figure out why. He’d probably do horrible at it and he didn’t exactly want to talk to this girl, but he guessed he’d have to do it, huh?

He walked up to the girl quickly, Seijuurou whispering words of encouragement as he went. At least that meant his best friend had his back in all this. The least he could do since he was making Shintarou do this…. He could do this, though,  he could ask the girl and not seem utterly rude. Well, he probably could at least.

“Excuse me.” She turned to look at him, her blue eyes looking bored and almost staring through him. “You’re Sakamaki, correct?”

“Ah, yes.” She gave a small nod. “You’re Midorima-kun, the shooting guard, right? Is there something you need?”

“I was just wondering why you would feel the need to manage the team with Momoi? Does she need help for some reason?” Well, there went him not sounding rude. “Besides, don’t you play for the girl’s team? You should really focus on your playing, not the boy’s team.”

“Oh.” She gave a hint of a smile. “I retired from basketball recently. I hope you’re not too angry at me for joining Momoi-san. The coach thought it was a good idea and invited me to.”

“Ah, I didn’t mean to sound so rude.” Shintarou shook his head in embarrassment, good god he was bad at this. “If I seemed rude, I’m sorry--”

“It’s fine, I suppose I can understand why you wouldn’t understand why I was here.” She said with a small shake of her head. “Let’s just let bygones be bygones.”

“Ah, sure.” The green haired shooting guard gave a small nod. “That’s doable.”

“Say! Asucchi, I have a question~” Ryouta’s voice suddenly hit Shintarou’s ears and he sighed. Why did the blond always have to do this during practice? They were getting close to a tournament, they needed to focus. Not ask the quiet managers random questions when they felt like it.

“What’s your question, Kise-kun?” Asuka asked, her voice annoying and her head tilting to the side as all the Miracles stopped and turned. Ryouta wasn’t going to do anything, so they might as well listen to this all. At least the questions usually led to somewhat interesting answers.

“What position did you play on the girl’s team?” He tilted his head to the side with a large, bright smile. That was right, Ryouta was more new to the entire basketball thing than the rest of them, he wouldn’t know that right off the bat… Not that they all knew, anyway. They just weren’t as likely to ask without getting embarrassed over their lack of knowledge.

“Oh, I played shooting guard like Midorima-kun.” She replied with a small shrug.

Seijuurou was frowning next to Shintarou. “Interesting how she shares so much with you, Midorima.” He said things like this often, pointing out things about Asuka that he didn’t seem to like. This time, though, along with many of the other times, Shintarou couldn’t help but agree...

“Ah, yeah…” Shintarou gave a small nod. That was a little odd…

Not something worth worrying too much over, though, he was sure. Coincidences did happen, right? The fact she was kind of similar to him was just one of those. He couldn’t let his superstition get to him in that moment.

“Is that all you had to ask, Kise-kun?” Asuka’s voice broke his thoughts again. “If so, I think you should get back to practice.”

“Ah, fine Asucchi! Momoicchi would let me chat more.” The model gave a pout, that didn’t seem to affect the other manager at all.

“I see, now get to work.” She said, barely blinking as her hair swished when she straightened. “We have to be ready for the next match, Kise-kun.” She obviously wasn’t going to put up with anymore of the blond’s antic that day and he couldn’t say he blamed her. No one could put up for them long unless they were Daiki.

Shintarou had to say, if anything he could kind of admire how Asuka wouldn’t let Ryouta get away with things like that. It made his job of nagging a lot easier, at least.

“Asuka, you do understand what I just said, correct?” Seijuurou was frowning and Asuka copied it. Seijuurou’s frown was such an unsettling one.

Ever since the one-on-one with Atsushi, he’d been scarier than before. She’d been able to at least pretend the fear wasn’t there before, but now? Now she couldn’t. This new Seijuurou was terrifying in every way.

“I’m not quite sure what you meant by what you said…” She replied, balling her hands into fists. That was a bit of a lie, but she didn’t care. She wanted to pretend, so Seijuurou might not enforce it.

“I mean don’t bother Shintarou again while we go to this school.” Seijuurou’s eyes narrowed slightly. “What is not to understand?” Of course he caught on, of course he knew she was lying...

“Does this include after?” Asuka asked, resisting the urge to hug herself.

“No, it’s not like I’d now if you disobeyed me after middle school.” Seijuurou turned away. “I just don’t want your crush getting in the way of victory.”

Asuka frowned. This Seijuurou was so much more fixated on victory, at least more apparently so, than the other. That just added to the scariness factor, too.

Enough so that she couldn’t bring herself to tell him no, no matter how much she wanted to. She didn’t think her crush was in the way, it was innocent. Satsuki had a crush on Tetsuya and nothing was said about that, so why her crush? What about her’s made it more dangerous?

Was this new Seijuurou jealous of her and, likely, his other self? Did he want to ruin Shintarou’s relationships since he couldn’t have a good friendship with him? How sad.

That didn’t matter, though. She was going to have to say yes, be obedient. The only way she wasn’t going to get completely on this new Seijuurou’s bad side was if she said yes.

“Whatever you say, Akashi-kun. I won’t talk to Midorima-kun again as long as I’m at Teiko.” She finally forced out, hating every word as it escaped. She didn’t want to say that…

“Glad to hear you understand me.” Seijuurou gave a smile. “You can go now.”

Asuka nodded and walked away, sighing as she closed the door behind her. Now she’d just have to wait until graduation… She’d have to stay in contact somehow, but how? Well, she’d heard the green haired prodigy say something about Shuutoku, right? She could always just try to go there…

Well then, there was her plan. Shuutoku was going to need a good manager, anyway. She would happily fill that roll if it meant she could stay close to Shintarou. Well, that and keep Seijuurou from being angry at her for it.

“Don’t worry, Midorima-kun...We’ll talk again soon.” She whispered under his breath and let a small smile come to her face. “Soon…!”

She just had to hope the lack of communication for the rest of the year wouldn’t make their relationship go sour. No, that would mean Seijuurou would win and she really didn’t want that to happen. Not when it involved her crush.

“I better go study…” She began walking down the hall, reason behind every little step she took. “I’m going to need to be smart for Shuutoku and for Midorima-kun.” She could totally do this.
